Who wants to be “normal” anyway?

I love to chat with my uncle Jim. His thoughts are deep; his dreams are big. He’s currently collecting thoughts and quotes to be published in his very first e-book.

Old Jim has lived more lives than a cat. He had been married once, but found that married life was not for him. He burned the wick at both ends for many years. He’s had everything and he’s had nothing. He survived not just one kind of cancer, but colon cancer and blood cancer at the same time. This was no small feat – he not only had cancer, but he also had no insurance.

After his victory over cancer years ago, Old Jim was ready to slow down the pace of his life. At this point in his life he wanted to have a 9 to 5 job like “normal” people. So he has worked at this job for many years, carrying on with his “normal” life.

But Old Jim isn’t what I would call a “normal” person. Even while working this “normal” job Jim survived four – you heard right, FOUR - major heart attacks. Nine lives? Maybe.

During our most recent conversation, Jim explained that he has realized through these years of struggle and accomplishment that he just can’t be “normal.”

What the hell is “normal” anyway? Who has the authority to define this term? Does “normal” equal “the majority?”

Well I say that being “normal” is letting fear dictate your life.

Those who are fearless will dream big, will be travelers instead of tourists, will have thriving relationships, and aspire to live a life they love rather than letting the fear of failure keep them at their same old tired ass job.

Don’t misinterpret my words here, I firmly agree with Gail Brenner’s article on her blog, A Flourishing Life, which says:

Fear is not the enemy. It can be the voice of reason, caution, and practicality that serves you well at times.

But she also says, “Fear-motivated thoughts are all about “can’t.”

I used to get frustrated with my husband when I would say “I can’t…” and he would say, “Well not with that attitude.” But he’s exactly right. With a positive mental attitude and a dash of fearlessness you can do anything you put your mind to.

I thank Tim Ferris for this James Cameron quote (and other inspiration)…

Luck is not a factor. Hope is not a strategy. Fear is not an option.

What’s your definition of “normal?” Let’s discuss. I’d love to hear your point of view.
